Gaels Take Down Gryphons 61-55

| By:
BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. (November 2, 2013) - The Gaels (2-0) won a close battle against the University of Guelph (0-2) on Saturday night, defeating the Gryphons 61-55 in Kingston.

It was a messy game with many lead changes as both teams recorded over 17 turnovers and struggled to find their rhythm on the offensive end. The Gryphons made it to the free-throw line 29 times but were only able to record 18, leaving points which proved to be detrimental in the end.

Queen's led the Gryphons at the half 29-28, with Erica McFadden of Guelph leading all scorers with 10 points. The Gaels were putting on great perimeter pressure, which helped their scoring struggles by converting Guelph turnovers into transition points.

Early in the fourth quarter, Guelph took a three point lead, but not for long with the help of second year Emily Hazlet (Fredericton) and fourth year Gemma Bullard (Guelph, Ont.). Hazlet's defensive tenacity and aggressive takes to the hoop caused a quick lead shift and turned the game's momentum in favour of the Gaels.

Bullard kept with the offensive push scoring the last seven points for Queen's including a clutch three pointer and a backdoor lay-up off an inbounds play. Both Bullard of the Gaels and Erica McFadden of Guelph finished the game with 19 points each.

The Gaels are now 2-0 in league play and are on the road next weekend to take on Western and Windsor.
