OTTAWA (October 27, 2013) - With Sunday's playoff game tied 0-0 after regulation and overtime in Ottawa, the Gaels prevailed over the nation's top-ranked team with three PK saves from
Madison Tyrell (White Rock, B.C.) and PK goals from
Melissa Jung (Mississauga, Ont.),
Alexis McKinty (Burlington, Ont.), and
Brittany Almeida (Elginburg, Ont.).
After first place Ottawa earned a narrow 1-0 victory and Queen's, fourth in the OUA East, forced a 0-0 draw in the team's two meetings this season, this game was destined to be a great defensive battle.
The keepers were the story through 90 minutes and into OT, with both Tyrell and Ottawa's Cynthia LeBlanc clinging to clean-sheets to keep their teams' seasons alive. Tyrell saved all eight of the Gee-Gees shots through regulation and OT, while LeBlanc made 10 saves to send the match to a penalty shootout.
Tyrell won the battle of the keepers in PKs, getting a finger on Ottawa's first attempt to tip it off the post, and saving the second and fourth kicks cleanly. After Jung and McKinty scored on the Gaels third and fourth kicks, then LeBlanc netted Ottawa's fifth kick to tie the shootout 2-2, setting up the final shot for Queen's. Almeida made no mistake, blasting her PK into the back of the net to send Queen's to the OUA Final Four next weekend hosted by Western.
Joining the Gaels at the OUA championship tournament will be Carleton from the OUA East and No. 2 Western and Laurier from the OUA West. Coming in as the lower seed from the East, Queen's will play the top-ranked Western on Saturday at 2pm. The winner will play for the OUA title while the other plays from bronze.
