BOX SCORE NORTH BAY, Ont. (October 25, 2013) -
Kelly Jackson (Toronto) finished with two goals and one assist as the Queen's Gaels (2-0-2) beat the Nipissing Lakers (0-5-0) 6-4 in OUA hockey action on Friday night in North Bay.
Jackson had three points while fellow Gael
Blair Wentworth (Kingston, Ont.) had a pair of helpers. The Lakers were led by Connor O'Donnell who had one goal and three assists in the loss.
Jackson got things started quickly for Queen's notching his first of the game only 51 seconds in with assists coming from
Patrick Downe (New Maryland, N.B.) and
Joey Derochie (Sudbury, Ont.). Jackson added his second just over 10 minutes later and the Gaels finished up the first period with a two goal lead coming on 19 shots compared to Nipissing's 11.
The Lakers put on more pressure in the second outshooting Queen's 17-12. After a
Jordan Soquila (Maple Ridge, B.C.) power play marker Nipissing struck for thier first in the stanza on a goal from Dorian Peca at 3:09. Less than 30 seconds later Gaels captain
Corey Bureau (Amherstview, Ont.) notched his first of the year giving Queen's a 4-1 lead. The two teams traded goals to close out the period with the Gaels leading 4-2.
In the third Nissing made a game of it as Grant Toulmin scored 4:04 into the period and Peca followed with his second of the game mid-way through the third to draw the Lakers within one. Gaels starting netminder
Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) shut the door from there on and Queen's took the win.
Bailie finished with 34 saves for the win.
Next up for the Gaels is a matchup against the Laurentian Voyageurs tomorrow night in Sudbury.
