Six separate goal scorers lead Gaels past Badgers 6-1

BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. (October 17, 2013) - The No. 6 Queen's Gaels women's hockey team won their third straight game with a  6-1 win over the Brock Badgers on Thursday night at the Memorial Centre in Kingston.

Six seperate goal scorers tallied for Queen's in the 6-1 win and five players had multi-point nights.

Leigh Vanderveen scored the lone goal for the Badgers.

Shawna Griffin (Redwood Meadows, Alta.) scored her second goal in as many games to get things started in the first period for the Gaels. Next, Marie-Pierre Pelissou (Toronto) followed with her first CIS hockey goal to make it 2-0 after one period.

In the second the Gaels struck three times on Badgers goaltender Julia Ouroumis. Jessica Wakefield (Lucan, Ont.) scored her first CIS goal at 4:04 in the second period. Clare McKellar (London, Ont.) and Marlee Fisher (Kingston, Ont.) also scored to give the Gaels a 5-0 lead after two periods.

Vanderveen broke up the shutout for Gaels starting netminder Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.) scoring on the power play at 18:42 of the third period. Shortly after Gaels captain Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) got in on the scoring to close out the game 6-1 for the Gaels.

Lahonen stopped 27 of 28 shots for the win and Chelsey Verbeek (Beiseker, Alta.), Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.), Griffin, McKellar and McHaffie finished with multi-point games.

Queen's improves to 3-0-1 on the season and have yet to lose a game in regulation this season. Next up for the Gaels is a matchup with rival No. 9 Guelph on Saturday afternoon at 3pm in Napanee. The game will be played at the Strathcona Paper Centre.
