Gaels upset by Rams at home

| By:
BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. (January 6, 2013) – The Queen's Gaels (4-6) women's basketball team could not record their first win of the new year when they hosted the Ryerson Rams (3-6) on Sunday at the ARC Main Gym. The Gaels fought hard and lost a close match 70-64; however it was a Rams 11-5 run to close out the game proved too much.

The Gaels started the first quarter on a 7-4 run; with post Hanna Koposhynska (Mississauga, Ont.) grabbing two key defensive rebounds and turning them into points at the other end. Second-year forward Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) added to the Gaels run netting a three-pointer, then recording a steal on the defensive end to start another successful Gaels drive. Wright was named the Dominos “Dominator of the Game”, recording 18 points, three rebounds and three steals.

In the second quarter it was Queen's guard Liz Boag (Kingston, Ont.) taking control, recording five points and a steal on the quarter. Ryerson guard Cassandra Nofuente (Toronto) and forward Annie Sokoloff (North Vancouver, B.C.) were equally as dominate for the Rams however, answering the Gaels with scoring of their own. Nofuente and Sokoloff finished with 16 and 12 respectively. Five points from Nofuente in the final minutes before half, gave Rams the 35-31 lead going into the break.

Opening the second half it was Boag and Wright initiating a Gaels comeback. The tandem combined for 12 points and two steals in the third to help the Gaels take a two point lead, 39-37. This was short-lived, as Ryerson guard C'airah Gabriel-Robinson (Mississauga, Ont.) netted two key baskets to help give the Rams a 49-48 lead going into the final frame.

The fourth quarter featured more end-to-end basketball from both teams, however it was the Rams holding a slight edge going into the final minutes. In the final minutes Queens saw noteworthy efforts from Gemma Bullard (Guelph, Ont.) and Koposhynska who were efficient in putting up points and coming down with pivotal rebounds. Unfortunately it was not enough, as the Rams answered the Gaels scoring and netted all of their foul shot opportunities.

The Gaels women's basketball team hope to get their first win of 2013 Thursday, when they host the York Lions. Tip-off is set for 5 pm in the ARC Main Gym. Thursday is the Gaels "Shoot for the Cure" game for the year where funds will be raised for breast cancer awareness.
