BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. (January 5, 2012) – The Queen's Gaels men's basketball team was dynamic offensively in their first win of 2013, beating the Toronto Varsity Blues 82-74. Gaels guard
Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ontario) was the game leader in points, with 27, while adding nine rebounds and three blocks.
Faulkner got things started for the Gaels, making back-to-back three balls early in the first quarter to cap off a 10-6 Gaels run. Rookie guard
Sukhpreet Singh (Toronto) added another three mid-way through the first, while guard
Cy Samuels (Vaughn, Ont.) was dominant along the glass grabbing two pivotal defensive rebounds which led to baskets. Queen's guard
Andrew Mavety (Vancouver) closed out the first frame with a three pointer.
Despite scoring sprees from Alex Hill (Toronto) and Ben Garvin (Holland Landing, Ont.), the Gaels were able to maintain their lead going into the break—much in part because of two three pointers from
Roshane Roberts (Vaughn, Ont.). Roberts finished the game with 19 points and a steal.
The Varsity Blues were able to gain some more momentum going into the final quarter with more scoring from Hill and Garvin, who finished with 23 and 15 points respectively. However a stingy Gaels defense proved too much for the Blues; with Faulkner making three timely blocks, and
James Asefa (Toronto) recording three steals. At the other end, Queens always seemed to have an answer for Toronto's offense. Most notably, the and-one play by Faulkner mid-way through the fourth that halted a Blues scoring run.
The Queen's Gaels men's basketball team hopes to continue their winning ways when they host the Ryerson Rams on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 3 pm in the ARC Main Gym.
