BOX SCORE Toronto, Ont. (January 26, 2013) - The Queen's Gaels women's basketball team fell just short of a win Saturday night after being defeated by the University of Toronto 60-55 in Toronto.
The Varsity Blues had the edge in the first quarter of the game, leading 17-13 after ten minutes. By half time, both teams kept it close with a 27-19 tight score in Toronto's favour. The Varsity Blues maintained their lead in the third quarter and put pressure on the Gaels, but by the fourth frame the Gaels were fighting their way back into the game with
Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont) making two of her free throws, and
Liz Boag (Kingston, Ont.) sinking a three to get the Gaels closer to the Varsity Blues. Boag continued to play hard for the Gaels sinking both of her free throws and making another three.
The strong fourth quarter by the Gaels led them to outscore Toronto 23-12, but it was not enough to steal the win from the Varsity Blues. The game ended with a score of 60-55.
Wright scored 17 points for the Gaels and contributed seven rebounds and five assists.
Sydney Kernahan (Calgary, Alta.) contributed a team high nine rebounds while Boag had 13 points for the Gaels. Jill Stratton led Toronto with 14 points and seven rebounds.
The Gaels played tough under the boards with 48 rebounds, but it was their high turnover that resulted in 16 points for U of T that contributed to their loss.
The Gaels return to action at home on February 1
at 6 p.m. where they will face off against the Carleton Ravens at the ARC.
