The Gaels rally past Varsity Blues to split road trip in Toronto

| By:
BOX SCORE TORONTO (January, 26, 2013) – The Queen's Gaels men's basketball team (10-6) was in action Saturday night against the Toronto Varsity Blues (2- 13) in the second of a back-to-back road trip to Toronto that started with the Rams on Friday. The Gaels were able to rally back, after trailing by 10 points early in the second quarter, to beat the Varsity Blues 77-76, earning the Gaels a split in a pivotal road trip.

Queen's was able to open the scoring in the first and build a small lead over Toronto with guards Ryan Golden (Barrie, Ont.) and James Asefa (Toronto) putting up early points. The Blues were able to stay close and eventually pull ahead with a 5-2 scoring run to close the quarter out 18-14 in their favour.

The second quarter began with more Toronto scoring with back-to-back Arun Kumar (Hamilton, Ont.) three-pointers to open an 11-4 run. Queen's was able to close the gap with a series of free throws and crafty jump shots from Sukhpreet Singh (Toronto) and Golden. Singh was the game leader in points, recording a season best 23 points—the first year guard also contributed a game high seven assists. Singh contributed eight of the Gaels 20 points midway through the second to give the Gaels an edge heading into the break, 43-40.

Singh led the way for Queen's in the third as well, contributing nine points early to help the Gaels build on their lead. Toronto was able to pull within three points at the end of the frame with Nick Irvine (Burnaby, B.C.) and Kumar pitching in on a 10-0 run to finish the quarter.

The fourth quarter started all tricolour, with Queen's starting on an 11-7 run. Golden knocked down five of those points to help build a lead late. Despite late scoring by Toronto and a series of Gaels fouls, Queen's was able to hold on and earn a lone victory in their trip to Toronto.

The Queen's Gaels men's basketball team hopes to build on their road victory when they host the Carleton Ravens on Friday. Tip-off is set for 8pm at the ARC Main Gym.
