Gaels fall short to Rams in first of two game road trip

| By:
BOX SCORE TORONTO (January 25, 2013) – The Queen's Gaels men's basketball team (9-6) was in action Friday evening against the No. 6 ranked Ryerson Rams (12-2) in Toronto. The Gaels couldn't answer the strong first line scoring from the Rams, with the starting five combining for 48 of their total 78 points—The Gaels posted a season low 47 points.

The first quarter turned out to be close, with Queen's staying within two possessions, 19-15. The Gaels were led by veteran guards James Asefa (Toronto) and Ryan Golden (Barrie, Ont.) who scored a team high 10 and four points respectively. Golden was especially crafty with the ball recording a team high three assists, while also contributing five rebounds.

Ryerson was able to build a lead before going into the half, going on a 25-4 run to close things out 44-19 after two. The Gaels could not answer the Rams strong shooting from guards Ostap Choliy (Oakville, Ont.) and Aaron Best (Scarborough, Ont.) who contributed for a combined 35 points. Choliy lead the way with 18 points, while Best finished with 17. Queen's was also outplayed along the glass, being out rebounded 54-35. The tricolour were continually beat to the ball as well, with Ryerson recording 10 steals as well as four blocked shots.

The second half started off with more Rams dominance, however in the fourth the Gaels were able to outscore the Rams 15-13. Queen's can attribute their fourth quarter success to strong play from their guards, who together contributed for 29 total points. The Gaels fourth quarter scoring was too little too late thought, as they fell 78-47.

The Queen's Gaels men's basketball team hopes to curb their recent three game skid, and pull a split in the road trip as they visit the Toronto Varsity Blues. Tip-off is set for 8pm at the Athletic Centre.
