BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. (January 11, 2013) - The No. 5 Queen's Gaels (15-2-1) offence led the women's hockey team to a 3-1 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks (7-8-2) in women's hockey at the Kingston Memorial Centre Friday night.
Despite a dominantly offensive first period for the Gaels, outshooting the Ridgebacks 15-2, they were unable to capitalize on their scoring chances early in the game.
The Gaels opened the scoring at the 5:06 mark of the second period with a goal scored by
Courtenay Jacklin (Regina) with assists from
Chelsey Verbeek (Beiseker, Alta.) and
Danielle Girard (Sarnia, Ont.).
Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) added a powerplay goal less than a minute later at the 6:02 mark putting the Gaels up 2-0;
Katie Duncan (Waterloo, Ont.) and
Samantha Regier (Beachburg, Ont.) had the helpers on the goal. Mid-way through the second frame the Ridgebacks cut the Gaels lead in half when UOIT's Samantha Forchielli (Hamilton, Ont.) added a powerplay goal, bringing the score to 2-1.
In an action packed and even-paced third period, the Gaels managed to hold on. Pilon capped off the game as she was able to add an empty-net goal to solidify the win for the Gaels. The game's final score was 3-1.
Karissa Savage (Calgary) had 16 saves for the Gaels, while Cassie Charette (Ottawa) stopped 38 shots for the Ridgebacks.
The Gaels will have no time for rest as they return to action tomorrow when they travel to Toronto to take on the York Lions (4-10-2). Faceoff is set for 2 p.m.
