Athletics & Recreation Celebrates Grand Opening of Nixon Field

| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. (September 27, 2012) – Athletics & Recreation (A&R) will celebrate the grand opening of Nixon Field this Saturday, September 29th, at 3 p.m.

Everyone is invited to join in the celebrations being held on the northeast corner of University and Stuart Streets. The field, formerly known as Kingston Field, has been completely renovated, including the installation of a new turf surface, thanks to the tremendous generosity of Queen's alumni Gord and Janet Nixon, and many other donors. Nixon Field will be the home of Queen's men's and women's rugby and will also support many other recreational and sport activities. This new multi-purpose field was designed to fit into the existing landscape in the heart of campus and is a premier rugby facility in Canada - certainly the envy of every other University in Ontario.

“Many people worked together bringing this project from concept to having our teams take to the field in a mere nine months,” stated Leslie Dal Cin, Director of Queen's Athletics & Recreation. “This field is a testament to what makes Queen's a great institution - the generosity and legacy of our alumni, the spirit and passion of our student-athletes and coaches, and the University's commitment to supporting the physical health and wellness for our students.”

The Gaels men's rugby team will take on the Waterloo Warriors immediately following the opening ceremony, and all are welcome to attend the game for free. The men's team stands at 2-1 this season, while the women's team is at 4-0 and are ranked fourth in Canada.
