KINGSTON, Ont. (September 22, 2012) –The Western Mustangs got the better of the Queen's Gaels, winning 22-20 in a close match in OUA men's rugby action on Saturday.
Both the Gaels and Mustangs started the game off strong, with neither team being able to breach the other's defense until the 22nd minute when Western's Eric Selvaggi scored a try out of a ruck. The try was quickly followed by a conversion kicked by Mike Turnbull. Queen's quickly fought back to try and close the gap, and managed to do so in the 32nd minute with
Doug Davidson of Parkenham, Ont. scoring a try from a scrum down, leaving the score at 7-5 for Western at the half.
Western started the second half with a lot of momentum, with Conor Trainor scoring a quick try in the 43rd minute. Trainor caught the ball just before the try line and was able to run it over to give the Mustangs a 12-5 lead. Turnbull took another successful conversion kick, and in the 46th minute, Western's Selvaggi scored his second try of the game giving Western a solid lead with a score of 19-5.
The Gaels were determined, and continued to fight back in hopes of closing the gap. In the 55th minute
Matt Kelly of Toronto, Ont. went on a five-yard run to score the Gaels their second try of the game.
Adam McQueen of Canmore, Alta. Followed the try with a successful conversion to bring the score to 19-12. Queen's continued to try and steal the win from Western with
Tim Richardson of Vancouver scoring a try midway through the second half, and McQueen kicking another conversion kick.
With minutes left in the game the Gaels were awarded a penalty kick, which was successfully taken by McQueen, bringing the giving Queen's their first lead of the game at 20-19. However the Gaels' luck quickly ran out when the Mustangs were given a penalty kick in the final minute of the game. The kick was taken by Joe Dalia, and was sent right between the goal posts giving the Mustangs the winning three points, and the four points in the standings from the game.
The Queen's Gaels (2-1) will host the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, September 29
, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. The game will feature the official grand opening of Nixon Field.
