McGill beats Guelph in triangular series

KINGSTON, Ont. – McGill's Katia Clément-Heyda (St. Bruno, QC) had a hat trick to lead the Martlets to a 6-4 win over the Guelph Gryphons in the Queen's Gaels 2012 Triangular Series at the Invista Centre, Saturday.
 
The Gryphons took an early 1-0 lead with a goal by Amanda Parkins (Kitchener, Ont.) just 39-seconds into the game. McGill's Katia Clément-Heyda (St. Bruno, QC) added a power play goal at 2:21. The Martlets took a 2-1 lead with an additional power play goal by Leslie Oles (Beaconsfield, QC) at 11:01. The Gryphons added a power play goal at 14:38 scored by Averi Nooren (Aylmer, Ont.), leading to a 2-2 tie after the first period.
 
Guelph took a 4-2 lead with two quick goals scored by Christine Grant (Mississauga, Ont.) and Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, Ont.) at the 7:39 and 7:56 mark. However, McGill's Leslie Oles (Beaconsfield, QC) was able to put another goal on the scoreboard at 9:22, leaving the Gryphons with just a 4-3 lead after two periods.
 
In a fast-paced third period, the Martlets were able to come back with three goals to win the game. Katia Clément-Heyda (St. Bruno, QC) had two consecutive goals to complete her hat trick, and Gabrielle Davidson (Pointe Claire, QC) added a final goal at the 18:54 mark.
 
The Gryphons close the weekend with an 0-2 record, while McGill and Queen's are both 1-0. The triangular series concludes tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 23, when the Queen's Gaels return to action and face the McGill Martlets at 2:30 at the Invista Centre on Gardiners Road.
