Gaels cruise to women's basketball win against rival Mustangs

| By:
BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. – The Queen's Gaels women's basketball team (4-3) were dominant at both ends of the court against their Old Four rival Western Mustangs (4-3) at home Saturday night, pulling out an impressive 72-53 victory.

For the Gaels (4-4), Jenny Wright led with 17 points as she went 7-for-9 from the field. Gemma Bullard (Guelph, Ont.) and Sydney Kernahan (Calgary, Alta.) scored 16 each.

Laura Dalley led Western (4-3) with 14 points, while Annabel Hancock and Jenny Vaughan scored 13 each.

The Gaels were commanding at both ends of the court in their last game of the fall semester. Queen's opened the game with a 20-0 run led by a pair of three-pointers by Bullard, a Liz Boag (Kingston, Ont.) triple and much additional offensive creativity, and impressive work along the glass by posts Kernahan and Hanna Koposhynska (Missisauga, Ont.). The Queen's defence was stingy throughout the game; however they held Western to their smallest point total in the first, only allowing three points.

Western kept things closer in the second but still could not climb back from their large first-quarter deficit. A Wright three-pointer, followed by a Boag coast-to-coast drive capped off an 8-0 Gaels run midway through the second, giving Queen's a 36-15 halftime lead.

Wright continued to dismantle the Mustangs defense in the fourth quarter recording a three, and 6 additional points. Boag and Wright also had a steal apiece, adding to the Gaels game total of 12.

The Queens Gaels women's basketball team is next in action in the New Year, on Saturday, January 5th, when they host the Toronto Varsity Blues at the ARC Main Gym. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
