Gaels biggest win of season comes against rival Mustangs, 114-76

| By:
BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. – A balanced attack led the Queens Gaels men's basketball team to a convincing 114-76 win against the Western Mustangs on Saturday night, at the ARC Main Gym. The Gaels had seven players score in double figures, led by 21 from rookie Sukhpreet Singh (Toronto, Ont.) as they improved to 6-2 in regular-season play. With the loss, Western dropped to 1-6.

In addition to Singh's 21, the Gaels got 17 points from Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.), 15 from Roshane Roberts (Vaughan, Ont.), 11 from James Asefa (Toronto, Ont.) and 10 each from John Lenz (Ottawa, Ont.), Mackenzie Simpson (Ottawa, Ont.) and Andrew Mavety (Vancouver, B.C.).

For Western, Gregory Morrow led with 19 points, while Peter Scholts scored 15 and Andrew Van Camp chipped in with 10.

The first quarter was close, with Queen's narrowly pulling ahead with Lenz grabbing key rebounds and putting them back in for important Gaels points. A timely three-point shot from forward Simpson was important in Queen's establishing a lead on rival Western. Lenz closed out the first by making a set of free throw shots, giving Queen's a 26-21 lead.

The Gaels and Mustangs kept things close in the second quarter with Morrow making two three point shots and a traditional three-point play; and Queen's answering back with Singh hooking up on a few precisely executed offensive plays, and Simpson and Asefa each draining a three-point shot. Queen's got into foul trouble late in the quarter to give Western easy baskets which allowed them to cut the gap to 45-41 at halftime.

Strong play at both ends of the court in the second half allowed the Gaels to claim their most dominant victory of the season, winning by 38 points. The Gaels lead almost every statistic, including: rebounding 37-23, field-goal percentage 62% vs. 49%, three-point percentage 43% vs. 41%, and steals 19-10. Queen's was entertaining to watch as they made a bevy of three-point shots in the second half from Mavety, Simpson, Singh and Faulkner. An impressive steal and dunk from Faulkner, followed by a successful Patrick Street (Etobicoke, Ont.) foul play and a Simpson lay-up, gave the Gaels a 38 point lead and the victory.

The Queens Gaels men's basketball team is next in action in the new year, on Saturday January 5th, when they host the Toronto Varsity Blues at the ARC Main Gym. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
