Gaels suffer first loss in women's hockey, 3-2 to Western

| By:
BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. – The No. 6-ranked Queen's Gaels were unable to bounce back from a 2-0 deficit, as they fell, 3-2, to the No. 10-ranked Western Mustangs in OUA women's hockey action at the Kingston Memorial Centre Sunday afternoon.

The Gaels played a predominantly offensive game in the first period putting up 18 shots, however it was Western's Carly Rolph (Guelph, Ont.) who scored, putting Western up 1-0. The remainder of the period had numerous scoring opportunities, however neither team was able to capitalize.

The Mustangs increased their lead to 2-0 with a goal scored by Samantha Nastasiuk (Barrie, Ont.) at 3:24 in the second period. Western controlled the puck in their end most of the period, but Queen's took control towards the end of the period and found a hole in the Mustangs defense during a 4-on-4 with a goal scored by Brittany McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) and assisted by Mary Coughlin (Amherstberg, Ont.) and Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.).

The third period was fast paced on both ends, however Madison Turk (Calgary, Alta.) added another goal for the Mustangs on a power play at 13:48. The Gaels had many scoring opportunities towards the end of the third period and Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) brought the deficit to just one goal with a power play goal at 18:12 assisted by Shawna Griffin (Calgary, Alta.) and Kristin Smith (Toronto, Ont.). With the power play continuing until the game's conclusion, the Gaels put up many shots, but were unable to score.

Karissa Savage (Calgary, Alta.) stopped 19 shots for the Gaels and Kelly Campbell (St. Thomas, Ont.) had 40 saves for the Mustangs. The Gaels are now 7-1-1 and the Mustangs move to 6-1-1.

The Gaels return to action Friday, November 9, as they head to Toronto to face the Ryerson Rams. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
