KINGSTON, Ont. - Zach Angus and Michel Clark both had 20-point nights as the Guelph Gryphons defeated the Queen's Gaels, 83-73, in OUA men's basketball action in Guelph, Saturday. Angus scored 21 points, while Clark added 20, as the pair combined to score half of the Gryphons' 83 points, as they handed Queen's their first loss of the season in conference play.
After the first quarter ended in a 13-13 deadlock, the Gaels led by as many as seven points in the second, at 29-22, but a 15-4 run to end the half put Guelph up 37-33 at the long break. The Gaels tied the game back up again early in the third at 40-40, but Guelph went on a 7-0 run and never surrendered the lead from that point on. The Gryphons, who were idle on Friday night, led 54-52 at three-quarter time, and outscored Queen's 29-21 in the final period.
Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) led the Gaels with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Sukhpreet Singh (Toronto, Ont.) added 14 points and Marc Paclibar (Minesing, Ont.) came off the bench to score 11.
For Guelph, other than Angus and Clark, Daniel Thompson scored 15 points and Charles Amponsah chipped in with 11.
The Gaels shot 31% from the three-point line (8-for-26), while Guelph was 11-for-26 from long range (42%). Queen's also struggled from the free-throw line, shooting only 65% (11-for-17), while the Gryphons hit 75% (18-for-24) of their foul shots.
The Gaels (3-1 OUA) return to OUA play on Friday, as they visit the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
