Gaels drop tough loss to Lakers in men's hockey

BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. - Taylor Clements (Toronto, Ont.) had two goals for the Queen's Gaels in a 4-3 loss to the Nipissing Lakers in OUA men's hockey Saturday night at the Kingston Memorial Centre.

The first period was action packed with Matt Paton (Woodstock, Ont.) opening the scoring for the Lakers at 6:22 on a power play. The Gaels evened the score at the 17:59 mark with an unassisted goal by Clements. Marcus Watson (San Jose, Calif.) scored for the Lakers at 19:08 allowing Nipissing to carry a 2-1 lead into the second period.

The Gaels took control offensively in the second period with two quick goals. Clements added a second goal for the Gaels at 3:56; Braeden Corbeth (Oakville, Ont.) and Tyler Moore (Winnipeg, Man.) had assists. Joey Derochie (Sudbury, Ont.) scored at the 4:57 mark leading the Gaels to their first lead of the game; Steve Schmidt (Campbell River, B.C.) and Patrick McEachen (Stouffville, Ont.) had assists. Kevin Flather (Surrey, B.C.) scored for the Lakers at 11:12 bringing the score to a 3-3 tie.

The Gaels began the third period with a 5-on-3 advantage, but were unable to put a goal on the board. Grant Toulmin (Langley, B.C.) scored for Nipissing early in the third period at 3:30 putting the Lakers back in the lead. Despite numerous scoring chances, the Gaels were unable to come back leaving the Lakers with a 4-3 win. The Gaels are now 0-2 against the Lakers this season.

Riley Whitlock (Calgary, Alta.) had 32 saves for the Gaels, while Daniel Spence (Langley, B.C.) stopped 35 shots for the Lakers. The Gaels are now 5-4-2 and Nipissing moves to 7-6-0.

The Gaels return to action Friday, November 23, as they travel to face the Ottawa Gee-Gees (4-3-4). Faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
