BOX SCORE TORONTO – A hat trick by
Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) led the Queen's Gaels to a 6-0 shutout of the Ryerson Rams in OUA women's hockey action at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. The second-year left-winger scored a pair of goals in the first period, and completed the triple with a second-period shorthanded marker. Pilon also picked up an assist, to finish with four points.
The Gaels jumped out to a quick start, as Pilon opened the scoring at the 4:21 mark.
Alana Smith (Aurora, Ont.) doubled the Queen's lead only 78 seconds later. Pilon's second goal of the opening frame, at 10:03, chased Rams starting goalie Emma Crawley (Herring Cove, N.S.) from the net. She faced seven shots, making four saves.
Pilon completed her hat trick as she broke in on net and made no mistake while the Gaels were killing off a penalty at 10:55 of the second.
Alisha Sealey (Elora, Ont.) scored her first career goal at 18:54 on the power-play, while
Courtenay Jacklin (Regina, Sask.) did the same at 10:43 of the third, also with the man advantage.
Altogether, the line of Pilon, Jacklin and
Shawna Griffin (Calgary, Alta.) accounted for eight of the Gaels' 15 points, as Jacklin finished with a goal and an assist, while Griffin had two helpers.
Karissa Savage (Calgary, Alta.) made 17 saves to pick up the shutout, the second for the Gaels in as many games. Dana Carson (London, Ont.) made 26 saves for Ryerson in the final 50 minutes, after replacing Crawley. Queen's outshot Ryerson 36-17, and was 2-for-5 on the power-play. Ryerson was 0-for-2, and allowed a shorthanded goal.
The win gives Queen's (6-0-1 overall, 1-0-1 OUA) three out of four points on their season-opening road trip to Toronto.
The Gaels return to action on Saturday, October 13, as they host York in their regular-season home opener. Faceoff at the Kingston Memorial Centre is set for 7:30 p.m.
