BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. – A power play goal scored by
Brittany McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) in overtime edged the Gaels past the Golden Hawks for a 4-3 win Saturday at the Sun Life Arena in Waterloo.
The Gaels took the lead early in the game with a goal scored by
Allie Biglieri (Toronto, Ont.) with assists by
Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) and
Alana Smith (Aurora, Ont.) at 6:38 in the first period. The Gaels outshot the Golden Hawks 13-6 in the first period.
Devon Skeats (Whitby, Ont.) scored a power play goal for the Golden Hawks at 6:20 in the second period bringing the score to 1-1. Queen's reclaimed their lead at 10:16 with a goal by M. McHaffie assisted
Alisha Sealey (Elora, Ont.). The Gaels quickly added another to the scoreboard with an unassisted goal by
Kristin Smith (Toronto, Ont.) making the score 3-1. The Golden Hawks were able to add a power play at 17:16 scored by Candice Styles (Orangeville, Ont.). Skeats' power play goal for the Golden Hawks at 18:37 brought the score to 3-3 to end the second period.
A scoreless third period forced the game to overtime. Both teams got to a quick start in overtime with multiple scoring opportunities, however a power play goal by B. McHaffie at 3:10 was the game winner.
Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) had 21 saves for the Gaels, while Erika Thunder (Buffalo Point, Man.) stopped 26 shots for the Golden Hawks. Queen's moves to 6-0-1 in the regular season and Laurier is now 6-1-1.
The Gaels return to action on Sunday, Oct. 28, as they play the Waterloo Warriors at the Columbia Ice Field. Faceoff is set for 2 p.m.
