Gaels win 6-3 in season-opener against Rams

BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. – The Gaels had six different goal-scorers leading them to a 6-3 win over Ryerson in their regular-season opener Friday night at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
 
In a fast-paced first period, the Rams played a predominantly offensive game in putting up 15 shots, but were unable to capitalize on their scoring opportunities. The Gaels had six shots on goal, however the scoreboard remained blank at the end of the frame.
 
The second period began with a Rams power-play goal by Greg Payne (Thornville, Ont.) in the first minute of play. The game continued at a quick pace and Gaels rookie Patrick McGillis (Calgary, Alta.) scored his first goal of the season at 6:28 assisted by Jordan Mirwaldt (Winnipeg, Man.) and Joey Derochie (Sudbury, Ont.). Queen's continued their offensive game and took a 2-1 lead with a goal by Brandon Perry (Timmons, Ont.) assisted by Drew McLaughlin (Saint John, N.B.) at 9:14.
 
The Gaels continued on a scoring spree as Mirwaldt added a power play goal with seven minutes remaining in the second period assisted by Derochie. Just 16 seconds later, at 13:16, the Gaels took a 4-1 lead with a goal scored by Braeden Corbeth (Oakville, Ont.) and assisted by Kelly Jackson (Scarborough, Ont.). The Rams fired back 43 seconds later with a goal scored by Jason Kelly (Toronto, Ont.) at 13:59. Ryerson's Kent McPherson (Stratford, Ont.) was able to add a power play goal to the board at 18:02 bringing their deficit to just one goal, leaving the score at 4-3 to end the second period.
 
The third-period remained scoreless until Derochie scored for the Gaels on a five-on-three power play at 13:52, assisted by Brendon MacDonald (Calgary, Alta.) and Mirwaldt. Brock Ouellet (Lindsay, Ont.) added a sixth goal at 15:56 bringing the game to its 6-3 final score.
 
Riley Whitlock (Calgary, Alta.) had 44 saves for the Gaels and Troy Passingham (Mississauga, Ont.) had 27 saves for the Rams.
 
The Gaels move to 1-0-0 in the regular season, while the Rams are 0-1-0.
 
The Gaels head to Toronto next week for a rematch as they face the Rams on Friday, Oct. 19 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
