Gaels drop close decision to Gryphons in five sets

KINGSTON, Ont. (January 7, 2012) - The Queen's Gaels (5-5) lost their first game of 2012  to the place Guelph Gryphons (7-3) in OUA men's volleyball action on Saturday afternoon.  The game went to five sets (23-25, 25-21, 25-14, 22-25, 13-15), and despite winning two of the first three, the Gaels could not find a way to secure the win.

Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont. and William Sidgwick of Toronto were the offensive sparks for the Gaels, providing 11 and 18 kills respectively. Zeeman now has 120 kills in just 27 games played, which leads the CIS in kills per game. However, the Gryphons' Marc Wilson of Stratford, Ont., Andrew Whitaker of Sharon, Ont., and Winston Rosser of Whitby, Ont. all finished with 12 or more kills in the match.

Scott Brunet of Calgary led the team with four solo blocks on the day. Defensively, the Gaels' Niko Rukavina of Mississauga, Ont. and Jackson Dakin of Courtenay, B.C., had seven digs apiece. Anthony Pitfield of Ottawa contributed four aces.

The Gaels play again tomorrow at home against the Waterloo Warriors, and will looks to advance beyond a .500 record with a win.
