KINGSTON, Ont. (January 21, 2012) – The Queen's Gaels (10-9-2) were unable to solve the Varsity Blues (11-9-3) starting netminder Brett Willows of Rivers, Man. on Saturday night despite firing 28 shots on net in a 3-0 loss.
Riley Whitlock of Calgary led the Gaels with 27 saves. Toronto's Willows stopped all 28 shots faced for the shutout. Kyle Ventura of Scarborough, Ont. scored the game winner for the Varsity Blues and also added one assist.
The two teams set the tone early on in the first period with players from both sides finishing every check and not giving up an inch of ice. This physicality did however result in a trade-off of penalties for each team. The Blues took advantage of costly Gaels penalties on a five on three advantage. Ventura fired a rebound over the right shoulder of Gaels starting netminder Whitlock to make it 1-0. The goal was Ventura's 13th of the season.
The Varsity Blues extended their lead early in the second period when Anthony Bergin of Scarborough, Ont. managed to squeak a shot through the pads of Whitlock.
Only 18 seconds into the third period Michael Markovic of Toronto scored for the Varsity Blues to increase the lead to 3-0. The lead would hold, and the game finished 3-0 for Toronto.
The Gaels return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Ottawa to take on the Carleton Ravens. Puck drop is set for 7pm.
Queen's returns home on February 2 for the Carr-Harris Cup when they take on their historic rivals the RMC Paladins.
