TORONTO (February 6, 2011) – Thanks to strong play from
Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont., and
Niko Rukavina of Mississauga, Ont., the Queen's Gaels men's volleyball team was able to stretch their winning streak to six games with a straight sets victory over the York Lions Sunday afternoon.
Set scores were 26-24, 25-17, 25-20.
Zeeman, coming off a 30 point performance against Ryerson, added another 15 points Sunday on 14 kills and a block. Rukavina also continued his fine play as of late, finishing the game as Queen's only other player to record double-digits in kills with 12. He also added a team-best nine digs in the win.
Michael Amoroso of Toronto, was efficient in the middle all afternoon, picking up eight kills and finishing the match with a hitting percentage of 54.5.
Three players on the Lions finished tied for the team-lead in kills as Felipe Humana-Paredes of Toronto, Nikola Sandic of Etobicoke, Ont., and Karim Khalil of Mississauga, Ont., each recorded eight kills.
The victory improves the Gaels record to 15-3 on the year as they now sit all alone in second place in the OUA, two points behind the Western Mustangs. With the loss, the Lions dropped to 5-13 on the year.
The Gaels will close out the regular season next weekend when they play host to the McMaster Marauders and the Guelph Gryphons. Queen's battles the Marauders on Saturday afternoon at 2:00pm and take on the Gryphons on Sunday, also at 2:00pm.
