Toronto edges Queen’s 87-82

| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. (February 4, 2011) - Another upset wasn't in the cards as the Queen's Gaels fell 87-82 to the second place Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday in OUA men's basketball action.

Queen's (3-15) was hoping to catch lightning in a bottle and upset Toronto (13-5) for the second time this season. The Gaels dumped the Varsity Blues 80-66 back on January 22 in Toronto.

Toronto's Anthony DeGiorgio recorded 20 of his 23 points in the second half to lead the Varsity Blues to victory. DeGiorgio also tallied six assists in 39 minutes of play in the win.

Andrew Wasik of Burnaby, B.C., was the game's top scorer with 26 points. He also tallied a game high eight rebounds in the win.

Dan Bannister of Newmarket, Ont., returned to form posting 22 points to lead the Gaels. It was the eighth time of the season he has recorded 20 or more points in a game.

The Gaels looked primed to upset the Varsity Blues down just 41-37 at halftime but DiGiorgio answered with 11 points in the first six minutes of the second half to pull ahead by 57-46.
Queen's wouldn't go easy and battled until the final buzzer posting 26 points in the final frame opposed to Toronto's 20.

Rookie guard Ryan Golden of Barrie, Ont., equalled his career high in points with 18. Golden also scored 18 points in a Queen's loss against Carleton back on January 14.

Queen's remains six points behind Laurentian for the last playoff position in the OUA East. The Gaels are in seventh place while Laurentian sits in sixth. The Voyageurs lost 86-55 to Carleton and play Ottawa tomorrow.

The Gaels will aim to break their three game losing streak against the Ryerson Rams tomorrow evening during the Marco W. Alessio Memorial Game. Tipoff is set for 8:00pm with a special pre-game ceremony set to start after warm-up.
