Gaels beat Rams in shootout

| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. (February 12, 2011) - Patrick McEachen of Stoufville, Ont. scored the shootout winning goal as the Gaels defeated the Ryerson Rams by a 3-2 score.

The Gaels started the game strong as they put a dozen shots on Ryerson goaltender Louie George of Waterloo, Ont. in the first period. However, the Rams would score the first goal of the game 24 seconds before the period expired as Rams forward Greg Payne beat Gaels' goaltender Steele De Fazio of Georgetown, Ont.

The Gaels would respond right away in the second as Kelly Jackson of Toronto scored 29 seconds into the period to even the score. Jackson's goal would be the lone goal of the second period which saw Queen's out shoot Ryerson once again, this time by a 14-9 mark.

Ryerson struck first in the third period as Dustin Alcock of Hamilton, Ont. beat De Fazio roughly eight minutes into the period. The Gaels' Jonathon Lawrance of Steinbach, Man. would even the score before the end of regulation and send the game into overtime.

Overtime was uneventful as the teams combined for five shots on goal, and as a result a shootout was necessary.

In the shootout, every shooter for both Queen's and Ryerson was denied until McEachen broke the stalemate as the sixth shooter and sealed the victory for Queen's.

Jordan Soquila of Maple Ridge, B.C., Ben Munroe of Kingston, Ont., and Alexi Pianosi of Halifax accounted for the assists in this game. De Fazio was strong in net for the Gaels as he stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced.

Queen's will look to extend their winning streak on Saturday when they take on the Toronto Varsity Blues. Puck drop is set for 7:00 pm at Constantine Arena located at RMC.
