Munroe leads Gaels to come from behind win over Toronto

| By:
BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. (February 12, 2011) – Ben Munroe of Kingston, Ont., scored two goals, including the game winner, as the Queen's Gaels men's hockey team (14-11-3) scored four unanswered goals in the third period to knock off the Toronto Varsity Blues (10-11-7) 4-2 Saturday night at Constantine Arena.

The victory is the Gaels fourth consecutive win and clinches the No. 5 seed in the OUA East as the team enters the playoffs. It also improved their record to 9-3-1 since the holiday break.

The Varsity Blues jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to a pair of goals from Byron Elliott of Burlington, Ont., the first of which came shorthanded.

After a scoreless second period, the Gaels, who were playing without five regulars in their starting lineup, got on the board thanks to a great goal from Jordan Soquila of Maple Ridge, B.C. Soquila beat a Varsity Blues defender wide before roofing a backhand over Toronto goalie Garrett Sheehan of Cremona, Alta., to cut Toronto's lead to one.

Less than two minutes later with his team on a powerplay, Jordan Mirwaldt of Winnipeg, Man., redirected a shot from Colin Bergman of Calgary, to tie the game at two.

The Gaels would keep the pressure up on Toronto's defence and it was Munroe, a defenceman who was playing forward in the game, who blasted a loose puck past Sheehan to give Queen's the lead.

Munroe would round out the scoring with Toronto's net empty when he dove at a loose puck and pushed it into the empty net for his fifth goal of the season.

David Aime of Clandeboye, Man., got the start in goal for Queen's and picked up his fourth win of the season as he stopped 25 shots in the game. Sheehan was handed the loss after stopping 29 of the 32 shots he faced.

The Gaels will now begin preparations for the first round of the OUA playoffs where they will face the No. 4 seed Nipissing Lakers. Queen's will host game one on Wednesday, February 16 at the Kingston Memorial Centre. Stay tuned to www.gogaelsgo.com for up-to-date schedule information.
