BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. (February 11, 2011) – Led by
Dan Bannister of Newmarket, Ont., the Queen's Gaels exploded for 65 second half points to dump the York Lions 102-64 in OUA men's basketball on Friday night.
Despite the lopsided win, the Gaels (4-16) were still eliminated from playoff contention as Laurentian (7-13) dropped Royal Military College 87-54 to clinch the final remaining playoff position in the OUA East.
Bannister scored 22 of his 32 points in the second half. The fourth-year guard was 12 of 17 from the floor including six three-pointers missing just a single three point shot all night
At the half Queen's held a slim 37-33 advantage, but used a 13-0 run midway through the third quarter to sink the Lions. Queen's tallied two of its biggest quarters all season in the second half dropping 32 points in the third and 33 in the fourth.
In all, five Gaels broke the 10 point barrier with
Nikola Misljencevic of Ottawa recording the second highest game total with 14 points.
Chris Barrett of Vancouver, B.C. earned 11 points while
Ryan Golden of Barrie, Ont., and Kingston's
Matthew Baker each posted 10.
Tim Boyle of Belleville, Ont., anchored the defence recording seven rebounds and six steals in the win.
Ostap Choliy of Oakville, Ont., was York's leading scorer with 13 points. Stefan Haynes of North York, Ont., recorded the games only double double posting 11 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
Queen's second half tallies were impressive with the Gaels going 23-for-32 in field goals and an imposing 90.9% (10-for-11) in three point range. Overall Queen's finished with a 59.1% (39-for-66) field goal percentage and 61.9% (13-for-21)from behind the arc.
The loss is York's third in a row and puts there record at 8-12 in fifth place of the OUA East.
The Gaels will finish in seventh place of the OUA East having an eight point advantage over winless RMC with just two games to play.
Tomorrow, Queen's will look to assist York as the Gaels battle Laurentian. Two points separate Lions and Voyageurs with fifth place up for grabs. The sixth place team will take on the No. 1 ranked Carleton Ravens in the first round of the OUA playoffs.
Tipoff is set for 8:00pm inside the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) at Queen's University.
NOTES: The 100 point performance is only the second time since 1993 the Gaels have scored 100 points or more... The last time Queen's broke the 100 point barrier was against RMC on January 5, 2010 (112-49)... Queen's has surpassed the 100 point mark seven times since the team began play in 1903...
