Morgan McHaffie scores OT winner as No. 7 Gaels skate past Lions 3-2

KINGSTON, Ont. (December 3, 2011) The No. 7 Queen's Gaels (9-3-2) fought back from a 2-0 deficit against the York Lions (7-7-0) to force overtime where Morgan McHaffie of Guelph, Ont. scored the winner. With the 3-2 win the Gaels head into the winter break having won two straight games.

The Lions opened the scoring in the first period when Andrea Joyce of Mississauga, Ont. scored her fifth goal of the season. York outshot the Gaels 14-6 in the first frame while Melanie Dodd-Moher of Stittsville, Ont. made her second start in as many days stopping 13 first period shots from the Lions.

In the second the Lions added to their lead on the power play when Chloe Milano of Maple, Ont. scored her fifth goal of the season. Lisa Stathopulos of Toronto added the lone assist, her second of the game.

In the third frame the Gaels were finally able to solve Lions starting netminder Megan Lee of Orillia, Ont. as Queen's took to the power play. Shawna Griffin of Redwood Meadows, Alta. scored her fifth goal of the season cutting the York lead in half. Mary Coughlin of Amhertsburg, Ont. and Kristin Smith of Toronto added the two assists.

With time ticking down and only 40 seconds remaining, the Gaels tied the game at 2-2 when Alex Cieslowski of Oakville, Ont. scored her 10th goal of the season with Morgan and Brittany McHaffie of Guelph, Ont. adding the assists on the goal which forced overtime.

Morgan secured the Gaels two points on the night when she buried her 13th goal of the season on the power play for the game winner. Katie Duncan of Waterloo, Ont. added the assist.

Dodd-Moher made 31 saves for her fifth win of the season and second in as many nights.

The Gaels return to action on January 6 when they host the UOIT Ridgebacks at the Memorial Centre. Puck drop is set for 7:30pm.
