KINGSTON, Ont. (November 19, 2011)- The Gaels (3-4) jumped out to a two set lead but could not hold on as they lost to the McMaster Marauders (6-2) at home in five sets. Set scores were 21-25; 15-25; 25-22; 26-24; 15-11.
The Gaels started off slow, but rallied to win the first set 25-21after an early timeout. Libero
Niko Rukavina of Mississauga, Ont. and
Alex Oneid of Ottawa sprawled across the court on several occasions to keep key points alive.
Michael Amoroso of Toronto also stepped up big, presenting the Marauders with a wall up at the net. He finished the night with 11 kills.
The Gaels continued to play strong, winning the second set by a wider margin of 25-15. Exciting play by both teams had the ARC buzzing, both on and off the court. A couple of hard fought rallies brought fans and players alike off their feet as the Gaels dug deep and scrambled to win a couple of momentum changing rallies.
The Marauders did not surrender despite the two set deficit, winning the third set by a 25-22 score and the fourth set 26-24. The Gaels had several chances to win, but a string of attack errors forced a fifth set.
The Gaels could not regain their previous momentum against the hot Marauders, losing 15-11 in the fifth set and bringing the end of a heated and emotional game.
Will Sidgwick of Toronto's 9 kills and
Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ontario's 21 kills led the Gaels as both players were both swinging strong throughout the match.
The Gaels return to action on December 2 when they host the Ryerson Rams in the ARC. Start time is set for 8:00 pm.
