MONTREAL (November 12, 2011)
Chantal McFetridge of Kelowna, B.C. scored the final and deciding goal in penalty kicks as the Gaels advance to the CIS Championship match. After a scoreless regulation and extra time the game went to penalty kicks where the Gaels prevailed 3-2.
Early on in the match the Gaels would start with a few chances when
Alexis McKinty of Burlington, Ont. sent a cross in front of the Gee Gees goal that found McFetridge who blasted a shot just wide of the goal. With the Gaels controlling much of the possession in the first half Ottawa starting keeper Cynthia Leblanc of Grandby, Que. was busy early but able to handle the Gaels attempts and clear the ball out of harms way on numerous occasions keeping the game at 0-0.
In the second half Ottawa came out on the attack as Kate Landry of Ottawa broke down the left side against the Gaels defence and fired a shot that rang off the outside right post and just wide. The Gee Gees back defence led by Gillian Baggot of Ottawa kept OUA leading scorer Jacquline Tessier of Peterborough, Ont. at bay on the afternoon forcing her to the outside.
The Gaels would get a few good chances of their own in the second as McFetridge managed an outside shot on goal that was grabbed by Leblanc. Next it would be OUA East MVP
Riley Filion who created some space with great footwork for a shot at the Gee Gees goal. Leblanc continued her strong play in net and stopped the Filion attempt.
After a loose ball slipped behind Leblanc the Gaels were unnable to pounce on the open chance as Baggot got to the ball first and cleared it out of bounds for a Gaels corner.
After a scoreless regulation the two teams went to extra time. Ottawa native Corina Jarrett had a great chance early as the Gee Gees midfielder fired a shot to the left of the goal. Gaels starting keeper
Chantel Marson of London, Ont. followed the ball the entire way as she made the diving stop.
Later the Gee Gees Sarah De Carufel just missed a shot wide of the Gaels net.
With time winding down a McKinty cross to Tessier on the far left side was deflected right at Leblanc who handled the attempt with ease.
The two teams were forced to penalty kicks, after the Gee Gees fourth shooter Candice Smith of Waterloo, Ont. fired her shot over the net Tessier converted for the Gaels who took the advantage. Kaitlind Smith of Ottawa scored on the fifth Gee Gee attempt and McFetridge was left with the chance to win. The third year midfielder made no mistake as she secured the victory, sending the Gaels to the CIS Championship match.
