BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. (November 11, 2011) – After a huge third quarter, the Gaels topped the Lakehead University Thunderwolves 57-44 to open up their 2011-12 season on a positive note.
The Gaels controlled the game from the get go, outscoring Lakehead by four points in each quarter. They went into the half with a 28-20 lead.
The Thunderwolves had their chances early on as they dominated the glass hauling in 11 offensive rebounds at the half to the Gaels five. Lakehead was slowed by the Gaels defence and finished out the first half shooting only 19.4% from the field.
Despite being outscored 13-5 in the fourth quarter, the 24 point third quarter guaranteed the Gaels the win.
"We're a smart team and still a young team that is still learning," said head coach
Dave Wilson after the win. "Looking at the end of last season we were playing some of our best basketball, obviously we have some technical issues that players still need to learn but still happy with tonight's result."
Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont. led the Gaels with 13 points while Calgary native
Paige Robinson was close behind with nine points.
Liz Boag of Kingston and
Hanna Koposhynska of Toronto chipped in with eight a piece. Lindsay Druery of Smithville, Ont. led Lakehead with 12 points and 11 boards.
The Gaels are back in action tomorrow night against the Guelph Gryphons. Tipoff is set for 6:00pm.
