TORONTO (October 7, 2011) - The Gaels (0-1-0) cut a three goal lead to one in the third, but the Toronto Varsity Blues (2-0-0) held on for a 5-2 victory over Queen's as the Gaels opened up regular season action in Toronto.
After a scoreless first frame, the Varsity Blues responded three times in the second frame with all three tallies coming in less than five minutes to take a commanding lead on the Gaels.
Despite the deficit, Queen's brought forth a strong effort in the third period with early goals from
Kelly Jackson of Toronto and
Corey Bureau of Amherstview, Ont. The two goals came three minutes apart to cut the Blues lead down to only one goal.
Ben Munroe of Kingston, Ont. and Jackson assisted on Bureau's first of the season.
The Gaels however, were unnable to complete the comeback when Kyle Ventura of Scarborough, Ont. would give the Blues a 4-2 lead, putting the game out of reach. Toronto would then add an empty net goal from Byron Elliot of Burlington, Ont. for the 5-2 final.
Riley Whitlock of Calgary, Alta. got the start for Gaels making 32 saves in a losing effort.
The Gaels will finish off their two game road trip to start the season as they head to St. Catharines tomorrow to take on the Brock Badgers. Puck drop is set for 2:15pm.
