KINGSTON, Ont. (October 26, 2011) - The Gaels and Voyageurs were forced into penalty kicks after a 1-1 game went into extra time. It would be Laurentian coming out on top, converting five of six attempts while the Gaels narrowly missed out scoring only four times. The Gaels are now elminated and Voyageurs move on to the next round of OUA playoff action.
Laurentian would get the first chance of the game when a strike from the outside came in on net and was deflected off of the cross bar in the 15th minute. The Gaels would respond with a chance of their own when
Jordan Brooks of Angus, Ont. fired a shot from just outside the box that the Voyageurs goaltender was just able to deflect over the net.
The Gaels continued to pressure late in the first half as
Peter Christidis of Scarborough, Ont. used some fancy footwork to gain an inside edge on the defender on a few occasions. The Gaels were denied and finished out the half outshooting Laurentian five to four.
The second half started out with more chances for Queen's, Christidis made a great through ball pass up to
Eric Koskins of Richmond Hill, Ont. who was all alone with the keeper who was able to deflect just enough of Koskins attempt on net for the save. Laurentian fired back onh a chance from David Alisic of Charlottetown who managed a shot on goal that was handled easily by the Gaels keeper.
Laurentian would break the tie midway through the second half as Alisic redeemed himself from his earlier shot and gave the Voyageurs a 1-0 lead. The Gaels evened things up at one as the team was awarded a penalty kick where first year Christidis made no mistake.
The match headed to OT where both teams traded chances before penalty kicks would ultimately determine the fate of this OUA playoff tilt. The Voyageurs converted on five of their six attempts while Queen's was only able to convert four of their six.
With the win the Voyageurs move on to the next round of playoff action while the Gaels season comes to a close.
