LONDON, Ont. (January 23, 2011) – One day after suffering a tough loss to the Windsor Lancers, the Queen's Gaels women's hockey team (10-8-4) rebounded with a resounding 6-1 victory over the Western Mustangs (5-15-1) Sunday afternoon.
The Gaels used a big first period, in which they outshot the Mustangs 16-7 and outscored them 3-0, to propel them to the victory.
Special teams also played a big factor in the game as the Gaels finished 2 for 7 on the powerplay while the Mustangs went 0 for 6.
Rookie forward
Alex Cieslowski of Oakville, Ont., led Queen's on the day with the first multi-goal game of her career, scoring twice and adding an assist. Four other Gaels recorded multi-point games including
Morgan McHaffie (1 G, 1 A) of Guelph, Ont.,
Kristin Smith (2 A) of Toronto,
Alana Smith (2 A) of Aurora, Ont., and defenceman
Shelby Aitcheson of London, Ont., who scored her first goal of the season while also picking up an assist.
Karissa Savage of Calgary, picked up the win for Queen's, turning aside 19 of 20 shots.
With the victory, Queen's moved into a three-way tie for fourth place in the OUA. The Gaels currently find themselves tied with both Windsor and Toronto with 24 points on the year.
The Gaels will be back in action this Friday when they host the UOIT Ridgebacks. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:30 pm at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
