KINGSTON, Ont. (January 14, 2011) – The Queen's Gaels (2-10) did what only two other teams have managed to do all season – keep the No. 1 nationally ranked Carleton Ravens (11-0) margin of victory under 15 points. The Gaels lost to the Ravens 86-73 on Friday at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) in Kingston.
Carleton's 13 point margin of victory is their second lowest of the season. In their 11 wins to date the Ravens have outscored their opponents by an average of 20.6 points.
Only Wilfrid Laurier has been able to keep Carleton under 10 points with a 88-80 loss back on November 12. McMaster is the only other team to keep Carleton within 15 points having lost 84-70 in their only meeting on November 26.
Rookies
Ryan Golden of Barrie, Ont., and
Alex Weatherill of Hamilton, Ont., both posted career highs in points for Queen's. Golden tallied 18 points while Weatherill had 11 coming off the bench.
Golden also contributed a team high five rebounds with
Nikola Misljencevic of Ottawa and Tim Boyle of Belleville, Ont., also recording five.
Tyson Hinz of Ottawa was the game's top scorer for Carleton netting 24 points in the win. Hinz got a majority of his points from the free-throw line going 12 of 14.
Other double digit scorers for the Ravens were Willy Manigat of Montreal who tallied 20 points, while Aaron Chapman of Bloomfield, Ont., had 11 and Mike Kenny of Ottawa had 10.
Elliot Thompson of Fredericton, N.B., was the game's top defensive specialist brining down seven rebounds.
The Ravens held a 19-17 advantage after the first quarter and extended their lead to seven points at halftime, up 37-30.
Queen's tried to mount a comeback in the third, scoring 24 points, and were within two points with a minute to play in the quarter. Carleton would manage a 6-0 run in that final minute to take a 62-54 lead into the final frame. The Ravens would go on to outscore Queens 24-19 in the fourth to win 86-73.
The loss extends Queen's losing streak to three games and they sit in seventh place of the OUA East Division. Carleton on the other hand sits eight points ahead of Toronto in first place in the East.
Queen's will battle fifth place Ottawa (3-7) on Saturday with tipoff set for 8:00pm. The game will be the finale of a four game varsity set in the Main Gym of the ARC on Saturday.
Women's volleyball kicks off the full day of action at 12:00pm followed by men's volleyball at 2:00pm. Women's basketball tipoff is set for 6:00pm with the men's game ending the day.
NOTES: Golden's previous career best came just last week when he posted 13 points in a loss to Laurentian (Jan. 7). Weatherill had previously posted a career high 10 points in a loss to Guelph (Nov. 12)... Attendance for the belairdirect Rivalry Game vs. Carleton was 831.
