Gaels gear up for rivalry games

KINGSTON, Ont. (January 13, 2011) - The Queen's Gaels basketball teams are preparing for a big weekend as they take on two OUA East rivals when the Carleton Ravens and Ottawa Gee-Gees come to Kingston.

The men's squad is looking for their first win of 2011 this weekend. The Gaels were last in action this past Friday and Saturday in games against Laurentian and York, dropping both by 75-54 and 81-78 scores respectively. Dan Bannister of Newmarket, Ont. continued his exceptional season by scoring 24 points against Laurentian and adding another 20 points and 5 assists against York. Belleville, Ontario's Tim Boyle had his best career game as a Gael against York with a 27 point game.

The Women's squad is coming off of their first win of the new year after they beat the York Lions 71-62 this past Saturday. Second year forward Hanna Koposhynska of Toronto was named OUA Athlete of the Week for her effort against the Lions. Koposhynska scored a career high 20 points on 9 of 14 shooting, while going 2 for 2 from the free throw line.

Neither squad has played the Ravens or Gee-Gees to this point in the season.

Last season, the men's team was swept during the season by both Carleton and Ottawa, and eventually lost to the Gee-Gees in the playoffs.

The women's team swept the season series against Ottawa and lost both games against Carleton one year ago.

The women will tip-off against Carleton on Friday and Ottawa on Saturday at 6:00 pm both nights. The men will also face Carleton on Friday and Ottawa on Satuday, tip-off is set for 8:00 pm.
