Zeeman rallies Gaels past Wolf Pack to finish fifth at CIS Championships

KAMLOOPS, B.C. (March 14, 2010) – The distinction of being the fifth-best Canadian University Men's Volleyball team belongs to the Queen's Gaels.

The Gaels, champs of the OUA, downed the host Thompson Rivers University Wolf Pack 3-2 (25-23, 15-25, 21-25, 25-18, 15-13) at the 2010 CIS men's volleyball championships on Sunday at the Tournament Capital Center.

“I thought it was very, very even,” said Gaels coach Brenda Willis about the match. “The result might have had something to do with expectations, I'm not sure. I know they were so close in the first round. For us to go home 2 and 1 with this young team is very good.”

“There was not a lot of energy today”, stated TRU coach Pat Hennelly. “I'm extremely disappointed with our third set. We had a good second set, but didn't show any fire in the third until they had 13 points. Against a good team it is too late to show the fire at that point. I didn't think we should have waited until the 5th set to catch fire.”

The Gaels were led by Player of the Match Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont. He had 21 kills in 46 changes. Bryan Fautley of Oakville, Ont., had 18 kills to go along with 14 digs and was named a championship all-star following the tournament.

TRU was paced by Gord Perrin of Creston, B.C., with 25 kills and five service aces. Kevin Tillie Cagnes Sur Mer, France, had 22 kills, 12 digs and two blocks.

The result duplicates Queen's best-ever finish at the CIS Championship when they placed fifth at the 2005-06 tournament.
