Ouellet scores shootout winner as Gaels defeat Gee Gees

| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. (November 5, 2010) – For the second time this season, the Queen's Gaels men's hockey team defeated the Ottawa Gee Gees in a shootout, pulling out a 5-4 victory Friday night at the Kingston Memorial Centre.

The Gaels fell behind 1-0 after one period of play on Friday after the Gee Gees' Carl Hayes of Delhave, N.S., beat Queen's goalie Steele De Fazio on a powerplay.

The second period was a different story for Queen's as the Gaels put up three consecutive goals on Ottawa. Joey Derochie of Sudbury, Ont., got Queen's on the board after a turnover by the Gee Gees in their own zone. Brock Ouellet of Lindsay, Ont., put the Gaels in front with a powerplay marker and Scott Kenway of Calgary, also scored on a powerplay to give the team a 3-1 lead.

However, the Gee Gees would pull within one late in the second and jumped on the Gaels early in the third with two quick goals to chase De Fazio from the net.

The Gaels refused to quit and late in the third, Jordan Soquila of Maple Ridge, B.C., found the back of net to tie the game and force overtime.

After neither team could end the game in the extra session, the two squads went to a shootout for the second time this year. It would take eight shooters to determine a winner in this game as Ouellet beat Aaron Barton of Carlisle, Ont., to give the Gaels their fourth shootout win of the year.

David Aime of Clandeboye, Man., picked up the win for the Gaels, stopping all 13 shots he faced in relief of De Fazio.

Soquila and Derochie were the Gaels top point producers in the game, each recording a goal and two assists.

Queen's will be back on the ice tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Montreal to take on the Concordia Stingers. Game time is set for 2:00 pm.
