Gaels defeat Ottawa 7-6 in shootout

OTTAWA (October 8, 2010) – Joey Derochie of Sudbury, Ont., and Payton Liske of Wellend, Ont., scored in the shootout as the Queen's Gaels downed the Ottawa Gee Gees on opening night of the 2010-11 OUA men's hockey season.

Steele De Fazio of Georgetown, Ont. made both saves in the shootout to seal the victory.

Liske netted another goal and three assists in regulation while rookie Jordan Soquila of Maple Ridge, B.C. had two goals in the win.

Kyle Ireland of Rosetown, Sask., had a four point night for the Gee Gees posting two goals and two assists.

Queen's narrowly escaped with the win as they gave up a 6-4 lead heading into the final minute of the game. Ottawa's Dominic Jalbert of Gatineau, Que., scored with 25 seconds remaining and then Luc Blain of Longeuil, Que., scored the tying goal with just one second left to draw the overtime frame.

Ottawa scored twice in the opening six minutes of the game, but Liske put the Gaels on the board netting his first of the season at 9:26 on the power play. Queen's registered the next four goals before trading goals with Ottawa to take a 6-3 advantage into the third.

Ireland would score his second of the game at 10:38 of the third period to pull the Gee Gee's within two.

Other Queen's goal scorers were Ben Munroe of Kingston, Ont., Jordan Mirwaldt of Winnipeg, and rookie Alexi Pianosi of Halifax, N.S.,

De Fazio (1-0-0) made 41 saves in the victory including five in the final overtime frame plus two in the shootout. Aaron Barton of Carlisle, Ont. faced 31 shots making 24 saves.

NOTE: Ottawa and Queen's were both 3-for-6 on the power play... Queen's had six penalties for 15 minutes while the Gee Gees had eight for a total of 27 minutes.
