KINGSTON, Ont. (October 28, 2010) - The No. 6 Queen's Gaels women's rugby team are looking to win the 2010 OUA Women's Rugby Championship at home this weekend when the No. 2 Guelph Gryphons come to town.
The Gaels are coming off of a close 15-8 victory over the Waterloo Warriors in OUA semi-final action. Queen's scored two tries in the match, one from
Karlye Wong (Ottawa) and one from Ashley Ward (Barrie, Ont.), while
Annika Rinas (Oakville, Ont.) added a convert and penalty goal to round out the scoring for Queen's in the victory.
It has been a special season for the 2010 Gaels. In addition to an undefeated season which earned their berth in the OUA Championship game, Thursday also saw the Gaels have five players named to the OUA Russell Division All-Star squad.
Jocelyn Poirier (Ottawa) was named an all-star for the third consecutive year. Wong,
Susan Heald (Burlington, Ont.), and
Andrea Wadsworth (Toronto) all earned their second nods to the squad. Eightman
Ash Ward (Barrie, Ont.) was named an OUA all-star for the first time in her career after joining Queen's from St.FX. Kate Pasic (Oakville, Ont.) won the community service award for the Gaels in honour of her off-the-field accomplishments.
Guelph comes into this game as the only other undefeated team in the OUA. To get to this year's championship game they defeated a strong McMaster squad by a 39-0 score one week ago. Guelph had seven players named to the Shiels division all-star squad, and also saw Jacey Murphy named Shiels Division MVP, while Dominique Monaghan was named division Rookie of the Year.
The OUA Championship will be taking place this Saturday October 30 at Kingston Field on Queen's Campus. Start time is set for 12:00 pm.
MEN'S RUGBY
The Gaels will be looking to earn a date with the McMaster Marauders this weekend as they will also be taking on their counterparts from Guelph.
The Queen's men earned a third place finish in the regular season by defeating the Brock Badgers one week ago by a 16-15 score. The win put the Gaels two points ahead of Brock in the standings and secured a home matchup against the Gryphons.
Henry McQueen (Vancouver) and
Mike Wong (Barrie, Ont.) scored tries for the Gaels against Brock while
David Worsley (Vancouver) added two penalty goals to seal the victory.
The Gaels defeated the Gryphons by a 28-0 score earlier this season, and should they do that again this Saturday they will be heading to Hamilton for a rematch against McMaster where they dropped a close road game earlier this month.
Saturday's game will be taking place on Kingston Field immediately after the OUA Women's Championship game. Start time is set for 2:30 pm.
