KINGSTON, Ont. (October 25, 2010) - On a great day for lacrosse on Tindall Field, the Queens Gaels fell short of an OUA Men's Lacrosse Quarter-final berth by dropping a close game to the Toronto Varsity Blues this past Saturday afternoon by a 9-7 score.
The first quarter was a possession battle as both teams looked for holes in the opposing defence. Queen's broke through first and opened up the scoring in the second quarter with goals by Matt Eriksen (Handover, MA), Braden Hergott (Okotoks, Alta.), Kevin Harper (Oakville, Ont.) and Thomas Herren (Georgetown, Ont.). Toronto would reply with three of their own as Queen's finished the second quarter with a 4-3 lead.
The third quarter saw Toronto score three goals as they capitalized on Queen's errors. Thomas Herren would respond with his second for the Gaels who cut the deficit in half.
The fourth quarter began with Queen's down by one when Garrett Quinn (Baltimore, MD) scored at 4:44 to tie the game. Toronto responded to take the lead until Matt Eriksen notched his second of the game at 8:52 to tie the game.
The last 12 minutes of the game saw Toronto score two additional goals, and Queen's could not recover.
This marked the end of a positive season for this young team which looks forward to next year with optimism as there will be approximately 18 returning players which will provide a completely different look.
