Queen's edges Nipissing 3-2 in women's soccer

NORTH BAY, Ont. (October 23, 2010) – Riley Filion of Alexandria, Ont., scored the winning goal as the No. 4 Queen's Gaels held off the Nipissing Lakers 3-2 in North Bay, Ont., to earn their 13th win of the season.

The Gaels started the scoring early with a goal from Alexis McKinty of Burlington, Ont., in the 10th minute of play. Gaels' forward, Kelli Chamberlain of North Bay, Ont., would also score in the first half to make the score 2-0 at halftime.

Midfielder, Ashley Poirier of Thunder Bay, Ont., got Nipissing on the board  in the 15th minute of the second half as the Lakers attempted a comeback. Filion scored the Gaels' third goal in the 84th minute of play to give the Gaels a two point lead.

Lakers's striker, Leesa Church of North Bay, Ont., pulled Nipissing within one during the final minute of play to conclude the scoring at 3-2 in favour of Queen's.

Chamberlain's goal was her 10th of the regular season and makes her the second leading scorer in the OUA behind teammate Jacqueline Tessier of Winnipeg.

The win sweeps the season series against Nipissing and Queen's have not lost to the Lakers since September 13, 2008. 

The Gaels record improves to 13-2 and they lead the OUA East Division by three points over Ottawa.  A Gaels win tomorrow against the Laurentian Lady Vees will clinch the division for Queen's.  Kickoff for that game is set for 12:00pm in Sudbury, Ont.
