Guelph edges Gaels 3-2

GUELPH, Ont. (January 9, 2010) – The Queen's Gaels lost in five sets to the Guelph Gryphons in OUA women's volleyball action on Saturday in Guelph.

Queen's record slips to 5-5 and are in third place of the OUA east behind York and Toronto. Guelph improves to 7-3 and are tied for third place in the OUA west with Western. McMaster and Waterloo are atop the OUA west with 10 wins each. McMaster has a game in hand on Waterloo.

The Gaels jumped out to a quick lead on the Gryphons as they took the first set 28-26 before Guelph battled back to take the next two 20-25 and 19-25. Queen's would force a fifth set thanks to a dominating fourth set victory 25-17 but the Gryphons held on to take the deciding set 12-15.

Three different Gaels reached double-digits in kills for the game led by 12 from Natalie Gray of Oshawa, Ont. Elyssa Heller of Highland Park, Ill., finished the game with 11 while Colleen Ogilvie of Calgary, Atla., had 10.

Kylen Van Osch led all players with 13 kills for the Gryphons.

Next weekend, the Gaels play cross-town rival Royal Military College on January 15. On Sunday, Queen's opens the Main Gym in the Athletics & Recreation Centre. Game time is set for 2:00pm. Fans are encouraged to wear white and a special promotion will give a student a chance to win $3000 to go towards their academic study.
