KINGSTON, Ont. (January 8, 2010) –
Mitch Leger of Kingston, Ont., tallied his seventh double-double of the season as the Queen's Gaels beat the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 67-62 on Friday night in OUA men's basketball.
Leger finished with a season high 20 rebounds to go along with 20-points in 31 minutes of play.
Dan Bannister of Newmarket, Ont. and
Baris Ondul of Istanbul, Turkey chipped in with 12 points each.
Ozren Opacic of Burlington, Ont., and Ryan Harisine of St. Mary's, Ont., posted an identical nine points and five rebounds. Opacic was coming off a 27-point performance on Tuesday against Royal Military College.
The effort helped Queen's earn its fifth win of the season and third straight. Queen's is now a perfect 2-0 since returning from the holiday break.
The Gaels shot 41.0 percent in the win (25-for-61) compared to just a 34.4 mark (22-for-64) for the Blues.
Rob Paris of Toronto was the Blue's top player posting 15-points in their fourth loss of the season. Drazen Glisic also of Toronto had 8 points and nine rebounds.
Queen's pulls even with Toronto in the OUA east standings with 10 points albeit Toronto has a game in hand. Both teams sit four points behind Ottawa for second place and six-points behind Carleton who are atop the division with 16-points.
On Saturday, the Gaels will play their final game in Bartlett Gymnasium inside the Physical Education Centre. Queen's host the Ryerson Rams with tip off scheduled for 8:00pm. Festivities for tomorrow night's game get underway at 6:00pm with the women's match. Following the game the team will 'cut the nets' as a symbolic farewell to its gymnasium.
Next week, Volleyball will open the Main Gym at the Athletics & Recreation Centre (ARC) inside the Queen's Centre, while Basketball will play their first game in the new gym at the end of the month.
