KINGSTON, Ont. (January 30, 2010) -
Maddie Soye of Waterloo, Ont., had 13 points and nine rebounds as the Queen's Gaels won their third straight game with a 64-54 victory over the York Lions on Saturday night.
Christine Wallace of North Gower, Ont., also had a solid game for Queen's as she had 15 points and eight rebounds.
Jill Wheat of Marwayne, Alta., led the Gaels in rebounding with 10.
Queen's jumped out to a nine point lead after the first quarter but the Lions were able to stay in the game with some solid defence in the second quarter and cut the lead to six.
Both Wallace and Soye stepped up for the Gaels in the second half by driving to the basket and keeping their defenders off-balance. While York kept the game close, they were never able to catch the Gaels who picked up their 12th win on the season.
Nadi Qahwash of Kitchener, Ont., and Kate Mowat of Whitby, Ont., led the Lions in scoring with 13 points apiece. Brittany Szockyj of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., chipped in with 12.
With only four games remaining in the regular season, the Gaels continued to hold onto second place in the OUA East division with 24 points. They currently trail the Carleton Ravens, who defeated Ryerson 60-39 tonight, by four points and are two points ahead of third place Laurentian.
The Gaels will be back in action next Friday night when they travel to Toronto to take on the Ryerson Rams. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
