KINGSTON, Ont. (January 30, 2010) - The Queen's Gaels women's hockey team salvaged a win against the University of Ontario Ridgebacks on Saturday, winning in overtime 4-3.

Michelle Hunt (Mississauga, Ont.) scored her first career CIS goal at 2:04 of the extra frame to give the Gaels the win.

The Gaels looked to have the game under control when they exploded for two quick goals only 73 seconds apart in the third period. Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) scored first followed by Elizabeth Kench`s (Gananoque, Ont.) unassisted goal which gave the Gaels a 3-1 with only six minutes to go in the game.

However, a flurry of late penalties left the Gaels shorthanded and UOIT's Jill Morillo (Whitby, Ont.) capitalized on a powerplay advantage with 1:58 left in the third. Morillo added her second of the game just over a minute later to even the score at 3-3 with 57 seconds left in regulation.

Hunt answered in overtime with assists going to Brittany McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) and Alana Smith (Aurora, Ont.). Hunt`s goal in the extra frame gave the Gaels their 15th win of the season solidifying second place in the OUA standings, eight points back of league leading undefeated Laurier Golden Hawks. The Gaels are now 15-5-2 on the season and sit three points ahead of York while York has a game later Saturday night.

Kelsey Thompson (Martintown, Ont.) opened the scoring with her 12th goal of the season just 5:34 in the first period on the powerplay. UOIT countered back midway through the second period as Sarah Worthington beat Gaels goaltender Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) to level the score.

Dodd-Moher was solid again in goal stopping 29 of 32 shots earning her tenth win of the season. Meanwhile, UOIT`s Jessica Larable was busy facing 39 shots and stopping 35 of them in a losing cause.

Queen`s took the front end of the double header with UOIT on Saturday and hope to sweep the season series with the Ridgebacks on Sunday. The Gael`s will face the Ridgebacks tomorrow, Sunday, January 31st. Puck drop will be at 2:30pm at the Memorial Center.
