KINGSTON, Ont. (January 23, 2010) - The Queen's Gaels women's hockey team continued their dominance over the Brock Badgers , beating them for the third time this season Saturday afternoon 6-3.
With the win, the Gael's snapped their short two game losing streak and the two points allowed them to stay ahead of York for second place in the OUA standings.
Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) led the Gaels with two goals giving her 11 on the season. Her first, only 2:32 into the first period on the powerplay, jumpstarted the Gaels to three first period goals and her second goal at 1:42 of the third period was the eventual game winner.
Brock made the score 4-3 with a marker at 7:37 of the third period but
Brittany McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) answered with her sixth of the season only 47 seconds later to increase the lead to 5-3.
Queen's held on for the win by killing off a late five on three disadvantage with
Karissa Savage (Calgary, Alta.) making a couple big saves. Savage stopped 14 out of 17 shots to earn her fifth win of the season. Kelsey Thompson (Martintown, Ont.) added an empty netter with 16 seconds left in the third to clinch the victory.
Kristin Smith (Toronto, Ont.) led the team with four points including one goal and three helpers. Also scoring for the Gaels was
Alana Smith (Aurora, Ont.) with her second goal of the season.
Jess Cone (Winnipeg, Man.) added two assists.
The Gaels peppered Brock with 36 shots in the game, outshooting them in every period including a 14-3 advantage in the second period.
The Gaels penalty kill was stellar throughout the game killing all six penalties they faced.
Queen's (14-4-2) maintain a slim one point lead in the OUA standings over third place York Lions who also won on Saturday afternoon.
Next up for the Gaels is a matchup with the Guelph Gryphons (10-7-3) on January 23rd at 2:30 pm at the Memorial Center. The Gryphons currently sit in fourth place in the OUA. The Gaels are 2-0 this season against the Gryphons including a recent 4-1 victory on January 9th.
