NORTH BAY, Ont. (January 23, 2010) - Payton Liske of Welland, Ont., had three goals, while Jordan Mirwaldt of Winnipeg, Man., had three assists as the Queen's Gaels defeated the Nipissing Lakers 6-3 on Saturday night.

The win, which improves the Gaels record to 12-10-1, was Queen's third straight triumph over the Lakers. Nipissing falls to 8-12-1 on the season with the loss.

After a scoreless first period in which the hometown Lakers outshot the Gaels 13-9, the Gaels opened the floodgates midway through the second period with four goals in just over three minutes. David Chubb of St. George's, Nfld., opened the scoring at the 7:57 mark of the second period before Liske scored two goals in two minutes to increase the Gaels lead to three. Mirwaldt picked up assists on both tallies.

Thomas Franzon of Kingston, Ont., would round out the Gaels offensive outburst with his third of the season just three minutes and three seconds after Chubb's goal. Nipissing would get on the board shortly thereafter to cut the Gaels lead to three heading into the third.

After a Brandon Happeney shorthanded tally gave the Lakers life early in the third, Michael Bushby of Thunder Bay, Ont., quickly silenced the crowd as he netted his first of the year on the same Queen's powerplay.

Andrew Marcoux's powerplay goal would get the Lakers back into the game but Liske shut down any idea of a comeback with his third on the contest on a late Gaels man advantage. Mirwaldt would once again tally an assist on the goal.

Goaltender Steele De Fazio of Georgetown, Ont., was excellent once again for the Gaels as he turned aside 27 shots for the victory.

The Gaels now have six days off to prepare for next Friday's matchup against the Toronto Varsity Blues at Varsity Arena in Toronto. Puck drop is set for 7:30 pm.
