TORONTO, Ont. (January 9, 2010) -
Jeffrey Johnstone of Etobicoke, Ont., had three points, while
Steele De Fazio of Georgetown, Ont., made 37 saves as the Queen's Gaels knocked off the Ryerson Rams 4-2 on Saturday night.
The win moves the Gaels to 10-8-1 on the season while the Rams drop to 7-10-2.
Despite the win, the first period belonged to the Rams. The Rams outshot the Gaels 19-9 but only took a 1-0 lead into the second after a goal from Kevin Day.
Queen's turned their game around in the second period and would even the score of
Payton Liske's (Welland, Ont.) eight goal of the season. Just over a minute later,
Scott Kenway of Calgary, Alta., potted his second goal of the campaign to put the Gaels in front.
Before the period was out, the Rams battled back to tie the game thanks to a goal off the stick of Andrew Buck.
The turning point in the game came early in the third period. With the Rams on a powerplay, it was the Gaels who would get the best opportunity and
Jordan Mirwaldt of Winnipeg, Man., made no mistake scoring his tenth of the season to give Queen's a lead they would not relinquish.
Johnstone, who assisted on Mirwaldt's game winner, clinched the victory in the final minute of the third with his eighth goal of the season.
The Gaels will be back in action next Friday night when they take on the Nipissing Lakers. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
